The use of the Springbok as the national rugby emblem of South Africa has quite an interesting background.
In 1906, the first South African rugby team to tour Britain had just reached London. Sports journalists enquired about the team's nickname -
The South African team had no nickname, but the next day they visited the London Zoo and were surprised to find a small herd of springbuck there. Some members suggested that they adopt the springbuck as their nickname.
The idea was received with approval and the next day the team's captain, Paul Roos, suggested to the accompanying newspaper reporter that they call the team Springboks', which has been the name of the team ever since.

Dress Code: Come as you are !!

Walk to the upstairs bar, we have the entire first floor booked. Free bar food, like delicious chicken wings, potato wedges, mozzarella sticks and of course free biltong and droëwors at the bar. All you have to do is pitch and have a good time mingling and chatting with other South Africans. We usually introduce a special guest who has some bearing to South African's in New York, whether it's the local visa lawyer or an author of a good South African book.  So bring your business cards, bring a friend and come have a jol and meet other Saffers in the same boat as you.
